“Well, that was smooth.”

Cal could be such an ass. I’d like to see him cast an elaborate spell while floating on a goddam inflatable paddleboard in the pouring rain.

“I didn’t miss by much,” I said.

He looked to me and then to the shore.

“This feels like one of those times when a little is a lot,” he said.

Fair point. Still, it stung.

“Are you gonna rub salt in the wound or help me fix it?” I asked.

“You’re in luck,” he said. “My calendar is free tonight.”

Good, I thought. I really hate slaughtering zombies alone.
