Prompts: 11/24/25

  • 2 min read

This is how I started my fiction journey—prompt-based flash fiction.

I knew I wanted to write. But like so many other writers, I had no idea where to start. I’d sit down and stare at a blank document, frustrated and befuddled. I could feel creativity swirling within, but I didn’t know how to let it out.

Flash fiction prompts are amazing because they give you that much-needed starting point. The hard part now is just finding good prompts online. I’m solving that problem by generating and sharing my own.

And you can join the fun. It’s easy!

Pick your length and roll with the prompt to get your creative process started. And if you publish your fiction online, please link back to this page. Thanks!

100-Word Flash Fiction

Write a 100-word max story in any genre, including the following three words: damp, compute, alley.

500-Word Flash Fiction

Write a 500-word max story in any genre. Include the following elements:

Location: Somewhere that is entirely temporary
Item: A small, framed photograph
Character: Someone who believes they can communicate with inanimate objects

Feel free to get creative with how you include the elements. The story doesn’t have to be trapped in the location, for example. The way you interpret the character summary can be as unconventional as you like.

Just make sure you touch on each.

1,200-Word Flash Fiction

Use the following situation as a starting point for a 1,200-word max short story.

Start your story in the middle of a mundane but necessary ritual that the main character performs every day. By the time the ritual is completed, their entire understanding of their present circumstances must be irrevocably shattered.

Happy writing!
